Manor court 1815: encroachments

This list of encroachments on the lord's waste was included in the regular business of the manor court. It appears to refer to people who had taken over pieces of uncultivated roadside land to use as gardens.

[p.62] [At court in 1814 it was ordered that Richard Seaton et al. should view encroachments.]
Now at this Court Richard Seaton Robert Ivatts and William Ivatts the Major part of the Homage at the said Court, having made their Return to such Order and brought the same into this Court. The Jurors at this Court upon their Oath further find and present the following persons for having made Encroachments by digging up and inclosing the several pieces of land after mentioned, part of the Wastes of the Lord of this Manor near and adjoining the Highways within this Manor, vizt.
In the Parish of Winslow
George Orchard  A piece of Land 35 feet in length adjoining the premises of John Tookey MD,  and another piece 50 ft in length adjoining the Close of John Morecroft.
William Gibbs     A piece of Land 50 feet in length adjoining the Close of John Morecroft.
William French   A piece of Land 65 feet in length also adjoining the Close of the said John Morecroft.
Joseph Cooper  A piece of Land 50 feet in length also adjoining the Close of the said John Morecroft.
George Varney   A piece of Land 65 feet in length also adjoining the Close of the said John Morecroft.
Thomas Budd    A piece of Land 53 feet in length also adjoining the Close of the said John Morecroft.
John Walker       A piece of Land 55 feet in length also adjoining the Close of the said John Morecroft.

Joseph Saving    A piece of Land 125 feet in length adjoining the Close of the said William Bowler.
William Bellow   A piece of Land 85 feet in length adjoining a Close of the said John Tookey. [probably Hollow Furrow north-east of Tinkers End]
John Higgins       A piece of Land 74 feet in length adjoining the Close of the said John Tookey.
John Arnott        A piece of Land 65 feet in length adjoining a Close of George Jones. [south of Blake House]
Thomas Green  A piece of Land 65 feet in length adjoining the Close of the said George Jones.
John Goodman   A piece of Land 40 feet in length adjoining a Close of the Lord of the Manor.
Joseph Gibbs     A piece of Land 85 feet in length adjoining the said Close of the Lord of the Manor.
Thomas Woodward   A piece of Land 50 feet in length adjoining a Close of Mary Burnham. [probably north of Verney Road]
James Ablethorpe      A piece of Land 95 feet in length adjoining a Close of the Reverend James Priddy. [probably the glebe land south of Verney Road; there were later allotments there called Van Diemen's Land]
James Wenman         A piece of Land 140 feet in length adjoining the said Close of the said James Priddy.
Henry Holt          A piece of Land 160 feet in length adjoining the said Close of the said James Priddy.
Thomas Lomath         A piece of Land 60 feet in length adjoining the said Close of the said James Priddy.
William Lomath          A piece of Land 65 feet in length adjoining the said Close of the said James Priddy.
Daniel Holt          A piece of Land 60 feet in length adjoining the said Close of the said James Priddy.
John Holt             A piece of Land 80 feet in length adjoining the said Close of the said James Priddy.
John Walker       A piece of Land 140 feet in length adjoining a Close of the Lord of the Manor.
[p.64] Thomas Scott        A piece of Land 70 feet in length adjoining the said Close of the Lord of the Manor.
Richard Cox        A piece of Land 82 feet in length adjoining the said last mentioned Close.
Richard Alderman            A piece of Land 65 feet in length adjoining a Close of the Lord of the Manor.
The said Thomas Scott   A piece of Land 62 feet in length adjoining a Close of Edmund Cox.

[p.66] And the Jury aforesaid on their Oath further present that the several Encroachments hereinbefore described have been made by poor persons with the permission of the Lord of this Manor for Gardens, and may be continued without detriment or Injury to the Lord or Tenants of this manor.

Ordered that such several Inclosures  be permitted to continue during the pleasure of the Lord of this Manor, with the consent of the Owners or Occupiers of the Lands adjoining thereto respectively, and until the further Order of this Court.

Also the Jurors aforesaid on their Oath present George Jones for digging up and inclosing a piece of Waste of the Lord of this Manor adjoining the Highway from Winslow to Grandborough and a Close of the said George Jones, containing in length 290 feet and in breadth 25 feet littler more or less.

Also the Jurors aforesaid on their Oath present Thomas Goodyer for digging up and inclosing a piece of Waste of the Lord of this Manor adjoining the same Highway and Close containing in length 55 feet and in breadth 25 feet little more or less.

[p.67] Ordered that the said George Jones and Thomas Goodyer respectively do throw open the Enclosures so made by them, within a month, and that in default thereof that the same be thrown open by the Bailiff of this Court.
