Free and voluntary present, 1661

National Archives, E179/80/333/2

Charles II's second Parliament awarded him a special "present" in July 1661. This was an ad hoc way of raising funds for the Crown outside normal taxation (the Hearth Tax started in 1662). Commissioners went round the main towns in each county (hundred by hundred) collecting cash or promises, and if necessary returned to receive payment. Read more on the National Archives website. The extracts below are from the book kept by the Bucks Commissioners. Grandborough contributed much more generously than Winslow, and it would be interesting to know if that reflects how the inhabitants felt about Charles, or just more efficient commissioners. There isn't much overlap with the people who paid the 1663 Subsidy, some of whom were absentees.
