Notes

John Grace lived all his life at the Forge (now 5A Market Square and 2 Bell Walk). He originally worked with his father Joseph. After the deaths of his mother Elizabeth in 1881 and his brother George in 1887, his nephew Arthur must have come into the business. The 1891 Census shows John aged 53 and Arthur aged 21, with John's sisters Ann Gascoigne 64 and Mary Grace 50, and a niece Ann Ray 29 described as housekeeper. In 1901 Arthur was running the Crooked Billet and John was living alone. Presumably Arthur moved back to the Forge with his family when he left the Crooked Billet in 1903.
