Hockey match, 1906

Bucks Herald, 22 Dec

MR. J. A. CASTLE’S XI. v. WINSLOW.- On Thursday, 20th inst., Mr. J. A. Castle took a team over to Winslow, and had a very good sporting game.  The visitors opened the score, Castle putting through very neatly from a good centre.  Winslow soon equalised, and at half-time the score was 1 all.  In the second half Winslow quickly put on two more goals, and shortly afterwards the visitors scored another.  Just before “time” was called the visitors again scored, and a very pleasant game ended in a draw – 3 all.

Notes

J.A. Castle's team was apparently a mixed male/female one from Aylesbury. The Bucks Hockey Association was formed in Dec 1906 but Winslow is not recorded as one of the clubs. Hockey in Winslow was otherwise pioneered by Brook Hall School:

1907: Buckingham Advertiser, 3 Aug: Brook Hall speech day
The Hockey Club enjoyed their season very much and some of its members bid fair to become good players, but as a team we greatly need coaching, and Miss Bodger has secured the services of a lady coach (captain of one of the Bedford clubs) for this season, and we hope, after some help from her, that we may enter the lists against other schools.  Last winter we played against Aylesbury ladies and also a Bedford club.  Needless to say, we got soundly beaten, but perhaps it was a salutary lesson.  Mr. Neal very kindly lent us his field for the second time, but I am much afraid we shall be unable to have it again; and if any lady in the audience can persuade her husband to let us have the use of a nice level piece of turf in one of his fields, not too far away, we shall be very grateful.
