The table below summarises the enclosure award. Click on the number in the first column to go to the details. There were already some small enclosures around the edge of the town, mainly north of what is now Vicarage Road, west of Burleys Road and south of Horn Street and Sheep Street. Because some of the land went to the church and the lord of the manor in lieu of tithes, the size of everyone else's holdings was reduced, and most people got between half and two-thirds of the land they held before enclosure. They also lost their rights of common and access to pasture and meadow. Something over 1,100 acres were assigned by enclosure (the whole parish including 640 acres for Shipton enclosed earlier is 1,919 acres). About 65% of the enclosed land was awarded to William Lowndes, who cannot have held more than half of the land before.

Notes
Glenisters: William Lowndes acquired this in 1720.
Grants Baulks: William Lowndes acquired this in 1715; it evidently took its name from Walter Graunt alias Miller (d.1642) and his son Thomas (b. 1607, d. before 1674). It seems to be the land west of what is now Burleys Road.
Peter Lowndes's Close: the land which is south of what is now Western Lane and west of Granborough Road.
Cross Lane Close: the north side of what is now Vicarage Road.
Thomas Newman was at this date the landlord of the Hare and Hounds.
Robert Gibbs is shown in no.59 above to have a home close in the north-west corner of modern Vicarage Road and High Street. His house and garden were probably on the north side of the Churchyard.
Angel(s) Close: approximately where the road called Angels Close is now. It was presumably named after the Angel Inn.
Barretts Close: probably where the churchyard or vicarage is now. Thomas Prentice was a surgeon and apothecary with land in Stewkley who died in 1780 and left his land in Winslow to his daughter Mary Ann. His daughter Henrietta married the Winslow surgeon John Tookey.
George Maydon's dwelling house in Cowstreet was on the site of 28 High Street, later The Elms.
George Maydon's messuage in Sheepstreet became Brook Hall.
Robert Crockett's garden must be on the west side of the Turnpike Road roughly where Avenue Road is now.
Enclosure Commissioners' Expenses
Centre for Bucks Studies, BAS 375/22/43/8
This bill from the White Hart at Aylesbury gives some idea about why Enclosure was such an expensive process. The Commissioners had to assemble to hear an appeal. A bootcatcher was a servant at an inn whose job was to pull off guests' boots.
