This is the last Will and Testament of me Richard Mayne of Winslow in the County of Bucks Grocer First I give and devise unto Charles Willis of Winslow aforesaid Gentleman and George Mayne of the same place Victualler and Carpenter All that my reversion or remainder expectant and to take effect on the decease of my Mother Rosamond Mayne or the other sooner determination of her estate of and in All that copyhold Messuage or Tenement called or known by the name or sign of the Crooked Billet situate in Great Horn Street in Winslow aforesaid now in the occupation of Joseph Hinton  With the rights members and appurtenances thereto belonging  To hold the same and unto the use of the said Charles Willis and George Mayne their Heirs and Assigns for ever Upon Trust that they the said Charles Willis and George Mayne or the survivor of them his heirs or assigns do and shall so soon as after the decease of the said Rosamond Mayne or the other sooner determination of her estate as they or he shall think proper sell and dispose of the said messuage or tenement hereditaments and premises for the best money and price or prices that can be reasonably had or gotten for the same And do and shall pay and divide what shall be remain of the monies to arise by such sale and disposition after paying the costs and charges incidental to and attending such sale  and disposition and of the admission of my said trustees to the said hereditaments and premises unto and among my brothers and sisters Charles Mayne Samuel Mayne John Mayne Ann Weston and Harriet Mayne equally part and share alike to whom I do hereby give and bequeath the same accordingly and I do hereby declare that the receipt or receipts of the said Charles Willis and George Mayne . . .  shall be a sufficient discharge or discharges to the purchaser or purchasers of the said Messuage . . . for so much money as in or by such receipt . . .shall be expressed to be received And that it shall not be necessary for the said  purchaser . . . thereof or any part thereof his her or their heirs executors administrators or assigns to see the application of his . . .  purchase money nor shall he . . . be answerable or accountable for the misapplication or the non application thereof . . . Also I give  . . . unto the said Charles Willis and George Mayne All and every my part or share parts or shares of and in the two several sums of nine hundred pounds and seven hundred pounds in and by the last will and testament of my Grandfather Richard Seaton  deceased directed to be continued at interest during the respective natural lives of my said Mother Rosamond Mayne and my Aunt Ann Gibbs Widow and all other my estate and interest of and in the personal estate  or monies to arise by

[p.2] sale of the real estate of the said Richard Seaton To hold the same unto the said Charles Willis and George Mayne their Administrators Executors and Assigns Upon trust that they the said Charles Willis and George Mayne or the survivor of them . . . do and shall as and when as the same shall be respectively received by them or him pay and divide the same or what shall be and remain thereof after paying . . . the costs . . .  incident to and attending the receipt thereof unto my said Brothers and Sisters . . . equally . . . to whom I do hereby give . . . the same accordingly  Also I give . . . to the said John Mayne my watch, to the said Harriet Mayne my chest of drawers;  to the said Samuel Mayne my looking glass, to the said Samuel Mayne John Mayne Ann Weston and Harriet Mayne a silk handkerchief each and to the said Samuel Mayne and John Mayne my wearing apparel and other ornaments of my person equally . . . All which said effects I direct may be delivered to my said Brothers and Sisters accordingly as soon as conveniently may be after my decease Also I give . . .unto my said Brothers and Sisters . . . the legacy . . .of four pounds each to buy mourning and to Benjamin Stevens the younger, son of Benjamin Stevens of Winslow aforesaid Grocer a suit of mourning such legacies to be paid and such suit of mourning to be provided and paid for by my  said Mother Rosamond Mayne immediately after my decease Also I give . . .unto my  said Mother Rosamond Mayne All my ready money and securities for money and all other my personal estate and effects whatsoever and wheresoever and of whatever nature or kind soever and not hereinbefore by me otherwise disposed of or what shall be and remain after payment of my just debts funeral and testamentary expences the legacies . . . hereinbefore given . . . and the expence of providing the said suit of mourning for the said Benjamin Stevens the younger To hold the same unto my said Mother Rosamond Mayne for her own separate use independent of my Father Oliver Mayne the intention being that the same shall be for her personal and own separate benefit and not to be subject to the controul engagements or debts of my said Father Oliver Mayne And I do declare and direct that the receipt . . . of the said Rosamond Mayne alone notwithstanding her coverture shall be good and sufficient discharge . . .to my said Trustees or the Survivor of them his executors . . . for the said personal estate and effects hereinbefore given . . . to her  And I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint the said Charles Willis and George Mayne joint Executors of this my last will

[p.3] and testament And my mind and will is and I do hereby direct that my Executors and Trustees shall each of them be answerable for his own acts and deeds only and not the one of them for the other of them for the acts deeds receipts defaults or disbursements of the other of them but each of them for himself and his own acts . . . And that they or either of them shall not be answerable for any more monies or produce of my estate than shall be actually received by them or come to their respective hands or use nor for any loss or reduction therein without their or one of their wilful neglect or default  And also that they shall retain all their costs charges damages and expences in the trusts or executorship of this my will out of the estate and effects in them respectively vested by virtue thereof or out of the monies arising therefrom  And that notwithstanding his appointment as a Trustee and Executor of this my Will he the said Charles Willis shall be intitled to his proper fees for any professional business which he may transact in execution of any of the trusts hereby reposed in him In Witness whereof I Richard Mayne the Testator have to the first two sheets of this my last will and testament contained in three sheets of paper set my hand only and to this third and last sheet thereof my hand and seal this fifteenth [blank space] day of November [blank space] in the year of our Lord one thousand weight hundred and twenty eight

Notes

Richard was buried in 1829 aged 30. He was the grandson of Richard Seaton (will proved 1824), who left him the reversion of the Crooked Billet. Richard Mayne's parents survived until the 1850s. His shop may have been at the former Angel (2 High Street).
