Notes

Charles Mayne is listed at Anmount Lodge (later Box Cottage) in the 1851, 1861 and 1881 Censuses, but in 1871 the occupant was Dr Boisragon. In 1851 he was listed as "servant out of business", but in the 1853 directory he was listed among the "gentry". He must have started the coal business after that.

1881 Census: Western Lane
Charles Mayne, head, widower, 77, retired coal merchant, b. Winslow
Mary A. Priest, visitor, unmarried, 46, b. Brighton
Clara Wilmore, servant, unmarried 22, b. Winslow

He was the son of Oliver and Rosamund Mayne, grandson of John Mayne (will proved 1803) and Richard Seaton (will proved 1824), and brother of Richard Mayne (d.1829). His wife Eliza (?nee Alexander) was born in Brighton. Samuel Mayne his brother, father of six of the beneficiaries of the will, was a builder in Aylesbury; he died in 1895 aged 88. John Mayne, the other brother mentioned in the will, was a tailor in Berkhamsted and died in 1897 aged 87.
